I stink at drawing. So pencil and paper isn’t an option for me when working to design my perfect garage (which I’ll unveil at some point in the future). Instead, I’ve been using SketchUp Make —a free 3D modeling software program, once owned by Google, that’s been around for almost 20 years now. And while CAD-style programs can be quite intimidating, SketchUp is super-easy to use and has a huge active community made up of all kinds of people—from architects and interior designers to woodworkers and other creators.
A garage remodel can take many different forms. Some finished garages are transformed into guest bedrooms, game rooms, man caves or even master bathrooms. Others go the traditional route and clean it up to just keep their cars inside. The traditional route is certainly more cost-effective, but after analyzing national garage remodeling costs, the average price to renovate a garage is roughly $10,000.

We first used Crown Exteriors 2 years ago to repair some wood siding and do external painting. We were very happy with the end result that we decided to use them again when we needed windows replaced now. They are reliable and do what they say they will. In addition, they are reasonably priced and just do great work for the cost. Would use them again if we have another need arise.
Leaky doors and windows let in uncomfortable drafts and increase heating and cooling costs. Check your garage service door to be sure it has good weather stripping and a threshold that seals tightly to the bottom of the door. In most cases, if your service door is missing a threshold and weather stripping, it’s more efficient to replace the door with a new, weather-tight version. You can buy an inexpensive prehung metal exterior door at home centers and lumberyards.
Unlike many other home remodeling projects, it’s very easy to tell when you need to replace your garage door spring; your overhead garage door won’t open or perhaps more obvious, the weight of the door is off. When your spring is working correctly, you should be able to manually lift the garage door very easily. Likewise, when you open it, the garage door should not move and stay where you left it. If the garage door is very heavy or it closes as soon as you let go, then you need a new spring.

Know your priorities. Will your garage be purely functional? If so, durable surfaces and systems trump expensive trappings. Make a list of what you’ll need, from storage to appliances to furnishings, and then rank every item in order of importance. That way, if you have to cut things as you get farther into the process, it will be easier to make choices.

One of the main ways to succeed on a budget is to be organized and have a good plan. Having a good plan means knowing exactly what you want out of it. This requires you to decide everything from paint colors to trim style before the first nail is driven. Having a well thought out plan means knowing where you are getting materials from, and when they will be delivered. This plan is the bedrock that your budget friendly remodel will rest on.
Look for a contractor who specializes in garage remodels - or at least one who has experience remodeling garages. Ask to see pictures of previous jobs such as the before and after garage conversion picture shown here. A good contractor should be able to show you garage conversion designs and you can also get some inspiration from looking online at garage remodeling ideas. Remodeling a garage is different than remodeling other areas of the home, and it helps to have a contractor who understands that.

Determine needs vs wants: There is always a difference between what you WANT in your garage, and what you NEED. While you may want a high end entertainment complex, do you need it? Before you begin your project sit down and make a list of needs, and wants. By creating a prioritized list you keep yourself from overspending. Once you have your needs addressed, throw in a few wants.
Naturally, you have to know the cost of these things in order to calculate what you can afford to spend. That’s also the best way to ensure that you don’t stumble across any unwelcome surprises during the execution of your project. Using our free estimate for your garage remodel will help you create a realistic budget that actually meets your needs!
The first step is often fixing a cracked floor or leveling it, and sometimes even staining it to make it look more attractive; the repairs cost $500-$12,500, and stains range from $2 to $10 per square foot. Drywall is typically put up, which costs from $1 to $2 per square foot. Adding boards for a storage space above the garage typically costs about $2 per square foot.
The home office will cost at least $5,000, making it one of the more affordable options when it comes to converting your garage into living space. Like a bedroom, a home office needs all the basic amenities, such as walls, floors, and a ceiling. It needs climate control and a window. This room may also require additional outlets that let you connect computers, printers and charging stations. You'll need internet access and a high-speed connection, as well as lots of storage and organization options.
We had a great experience with Shane. He was hired for an exterior house painting, a 40's craftsman with varying ages of wood siding. He was honest with his assessment of the job, very confident with his work and was flexible with taking care of other small odds and ends while he and his team painted. I really appreciated that he was on-site with his team for the entirety of the job, so I knew that every nook and cranny we discussed would be taken care of with his oversight (not something you get with most contractors who have teams). He paid attention to detail, and had no issue working through and fixing based on multiple rounds of feedback. Our house was a challenging job, and he was not averse to doing whatever he had to do to make sure the quality was up to snuff. Whether it be paint upgrades, hours of sanding/chipping, and multiple do-overs in various areas. The communication took a little to get going, but we spoke generally every day and I had ample updates from him along the way. Would recommend highly!
Hiring a remodeling expert really is necessary. A professional will ensure that all building permits and inspections are up to date. They can also redo your garage space to make it more appealing -- both visually and functionally. Garages are an important consideration for homebuyers when deciding whether to buy a property. Displaying a professional finish can go a long way in helping you get the best price possible for your home.

As the wife and I gear up to make our way back to our hometown here in North Florida, we’re seriously considering building a new house on some acreage, since we can’t find anything that we really are looking to call our last home. Naturally, I’ve already been working on designing my stand-alone dream garage. I mean, as long as we’re building stuff… ?

If the concrete slab in the garage is the problem, there are more cost-effective solutions than a concrete mason. Most cracking, flaking, stains, pitting or wear can be easily fixed by calling a concrete specialist to apply either an inexpensive epoxy or polyurethane-based coating. These seals are very durable and can make your garage floor look brand new.
